In this installment of PoloWeekly‘s Featured Polo Clubs, we sit down with Wolf Jage of the Munich Polo Club – one of the only places in Europe where you can play polo 24/7/265… literally.

Read on to find out more and learn why the Munich Polo Club is a special part of the Equestrian sporting landscape in Munich…

Can you give us a brief background on the Munich Polo Club?

The Munich Polo Center was opened in 2012 on the grounds of the Munich racecourse. Directly next to the Polo stable with 48 outdoor and indoor boxes we have an arena with floodlights and a condition training machine. Our full-size polo field is located inside the training track.

Near by the racecourse is the Olympic equestrian facility with dressage and showjumping horses. The trotting course is also not far away. This equestrian center in the east of Munich is unique in Europe.

Munich Polo Club Stables

The Munich Polo Club was founded in 2015 and has now 24 playing members.  In our club are several “polo families”: two generations spend their time together on the Polo field. We are very proud that 5 of our youngstars will be attending the FIP Youth Camp in Hamburg at the end of May 2019.

What makes the Munich Polo Club unique?

The central location of the Munich Polo Club is our unique selling point. We are located less than 10 km from Marienplatz, the club can even be reached by public transport. And we have a good access to the motorway and the airport.

Of particular note is the ability of players to play the three types of polo at the Munich Polo Club, including:

  • Classic Polo on grass
  • Arena Polo (sand court with floodlight)
  • Stadium Polo (grass polo)

We always say: Polo 24/7/365. We are able to play 24 hours with floodlight on 7 days a week and 365 days a year (field, arena, indoor arena).

Munich Polo Arena

As already mentioned before we are very lucky that we can use the entire infrastructure of the equestrian center.

Do you host tournaments at the Munich Polo Club? What’s your most important tournament of the year?

This year, for the third time, we organize the Munich Polo Cup as part of the Pferd International – the largest equestrian event in southern Germany. Last year, 90,000 visitors visited the fair over four days. The tournament will take place from May 30th to June 2nd 2019

Munich Polo Club Tournament

We play – comparable to Polo in the City – in an area of 150 x 80 meters on grass with high boards in the Olympic Riding Stadium.

On four days three cups will be played, each with three teams. Three players per team. The game is played with a leather ball.

For the first time we organized the Munich Polo Ladies Cup. Female players from Clubs from Austria, China, England, Italy and Germany will be there

Can members from international clubs come and participate in your tournaments?

Yes of course. Players form foreign countries are mostly welcome. We can arrange horses for rent.

What kind of other tournaments do your members participate in, do any of your members travel to play?

Some members travel through Europe to play. And our female players are also very active in playing abroad.

Where do most of your members buy their horses?

Most of them buy horses in Argentina. But we do have also three horses from Kazakhstan in our Club. They are doing are very good job.
and we have some horses from Spain.

Are you seeing a lot of new people interested in playing polo at the Munich Polo Club?

Yes, of course! Above all, dressage and jumping riders are interested in polo. At the Munich Polo Center, school horses are available for training and for Chukker.

The biggest hurdle is the decision to buy your own horse. The step from the first to the second horse is not that big anymore.

If someone is interested in coming and taking lessons at the Munich Polo Club, what is the best way for them to get started?
